The "Damned Lies And Statistics" blurb in this weeks WoMag states that "14,800 hockey fans filled the DCU Center to capacity last Saturday for the Worcester Sharks nail-biting home opener".
I'm happy to see that someone at Worcester Magazine thought that the Sharks pulled in 14,800 in a jammed packed arena. Not so fast WoMag!! It seems that whoever on the "staff" wrote this piece heard the game was a "sellout" and just looked up the capacity of the DCU Center, which is in fact 14,800. They failed to realize that the Sharks play with the upper curtains closed, which lowers the capacity of the house.
In fact the largest ever Worcester Sharks crowd was 7,352 according to Wikipedia. As much as many of us wish that 14,800 people are heading downtown for the Sharks home opener that is not the case. The announced attendance was 6814 for the home opener according to the AHL.
