Poseidon in IMAX a review

Crystal and I went to the Jordan's IMAX theater in Natick on Friday night. Plenty of folks braved the pouring rain to check out the wet and wild adventure of Poseidon as the theater was packed. I will admit that I am pretty much sold on checking out new releases in the IMAX format rather than at a normal theater if at all possible, nevermind the screensize, but the crispness and clarity of the image in IMAX is beyond compare. But on to the movie...

In my opinion the cinematography and effects were spot on, great opening sweeping shots of the Poseidon prior to the disaster. I do think there could have been a bit more time devoted to setting up the characters prior to the rogue wave hitting the boat, but all in all that is a minor point. My biggest gripe might be the fact that Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas was cast as the sultry singer in the grand ballroom ringing in New Year's Eve. At least I can find solace in the fact that she went down with the ship.

My favorite chartacters were Valentin, played by Freddy Rodriguez of Six Feet Under fame and Elena his stowaway friend on the boat, as well as Kevin Dillon playing a drunk and obnoxious Lucky Larry. Josh Lucas was up to the task of leading everyone through a maze of obstacles to possible safety just in the nick of time. We have our typical moral stories in movies of this genre. Who will sacrifice themselves in order to save the others, so on and so forth. The director shows us that a group of strangers that include a loner, a young couple in love, a gray haired homosexual and a om and her young son can battle the sea and the rising tides in order to save themselves.

All in all Poseidon kept the action coming at a furious pace with great special effects. This one will keep you awake and on the edge of your seat.
