While running the "worcester" search term in my tweetdeck I stumbled upon the Twitter accounts of a couple of the Hartford Wolfpack players mentioning Worcester as their current AHL playoff opponent.

After Worcester spanked them 6-0 tonight as soon as I got home I sent messages to them letting them know how shitty they played. Now I see that Greg "Mr Balloon Hands" Moore is sending motivational tweets to Matt "Zabatron" Zaba and Brodie "moose_09" Dupont after their big loss.

AHL All Star Hangover

I posted a more formal AHL All Star wrapup over on Real Worcester, but I thought I would at least take a moment to post up some pictures and thoughts about the weekend's festivities here.

I attended the skills competition on Sunday evening and stopped in to check out the after party at Mechanic's Hall for a little while as well as going to the actual All Star game on Monday night.

The DCU Center was stocked with rabid hockey fans wearing minor league hockey team jerseys of every color of the rainbow. Even in this down economy it was easy to see that many out of towners took the trip to Worcester and were spending their money on all things AHL All Star related.

Both events we considered sellouts with 7,245 tickets sold for each day, and from what I could see both the city of Worcester and the Sharks organization came off well. I didn't hear anyone bellyache or complain about anything at all.

And as someone who lives just a couple miles away and parked on side streets for free I certainly have no gripes about the $35.00 I shelled out to attend the two days worth of events.

Stanley Cup on Display @ St. Vincents Hospital Monday 2pm-4pm

With the AHL All Star game rolling into town this weekend I see it has just been announced that The Stanley Cup will be on display in the atrium of St. Vincent's hospital from 2pm to 4pm before going on display in the lobby of the DCU Center for the All Star game that evening.

The viewing and photo opportunity is free and open to the public, so grab the kids and head on down to get some face time with Lord Stanley's Cup!

Catch some "old time" hockey in Worcester

The city has received its fair share of print in hockey circles this week as your Worcester Sharks have signed arguably the most hated player ever to lace up the skates in 43 year old Claude Lemieux, who has been out of hockey since the 02-03 season.

Of you were a fan of the Bruins in the mid 90's and early 2000's Lemieux probably made your blood boil on several occasions. Lemieux and his 4 Stanley Cup rings played in his first game for the Worcester Sharks this evening on Providence. I would expect Lemieux to stay in Worcester for at least a month or two, San Jose is rolling this season but I could see why they would love to be able to bring up Lemieux as a locker room presence for the second half of the season to help San Jose in the playoffs. In the meantime get on down to the DCU Center, the Sharks have been putting pressure on opponents all season long and have put together a nice string of five wins in a row before being stopped by Providence this evening.

Claude Lemieux. He was the ultimate do-whatever-it-takes-to-win player; using his stick to score big goals and whack opponents, while using his mouth to annoy foes and on at least one occasion, bite. He won four Stanley Cups with three different teams, garnering the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP with New Jersey in 1995.

His legacy was cemented when, as a member of the Colorado Avalanche in the 1996 Western Conference final against Detroit, he dangerously crushed Kris Draper from behind into the boards. Draper sustained a broken jaw, nose and cheekbone and required reconstructive surgery on his face. Lemieux was suspended two playoff games and incited one of the most heated rivalries hockey has ever seen.
